The Wedderburn CMN meets on the first Monday of each month at the Wedderburn Community House at 7pm to discuss a wide range of environmental related topics. Anyone is welcome to attend. The next meeting is coming up on Monday January 9th, (yes this is the second Monday in January, but the first Monday was a public holiday). The WCMN has recently gone through the process of becoming incorporated indepedently and elected office bearers and a general committee. The position of secretary remains vacant however. If you think you might like to get involved please let us know.
The Wedderburn CMN currently has Caring for our Country funding to spend on protection and restoration of Box Gum Grassy Woodlands and Buloke Woodlands. Works range from fencing, direct seeding, weed control and rabbit control. If you have Yellow Box, White Box, Blakely's Red Gum or Buloke on your property and would like to see it protected or enhanced, please contact me. If you think your property is worth showing off because of works you have already done again feel free to contact me.
The WCMN has begun it's fox baiting program in the Wychitella Nature Conservation Reserve to protect the breeding adult malleefowl and the emerging chicks. A remote sensor camera has been set up on an active mound again this year, (with permits from Parks Victoria), to gather data on the local population. The Victorian Malleefowl Recovery Group have also recently finished their annual mound monitoring program in the Wedderburn area with three mounds active this year. There were four active mounds last year, but it has been reported that one of the breeding pairs had one bird killed when hit by a car. Any accidents like this are vital to our data gathering and we encourage people to report these types of things. Numerous reports of single bird sightings have come to the group though suggesting there are a number of birds out there, it's just a matter of them finding each other to become breeding pairs, if they aren't all of the same gender.
The WCMN encourages people to report sightings of any animal, no matter how common you think it might be. Sometimes common species aren't all that common.
Keep an eye open for up coming WCMN events which will be advertised around Wedderburn. Events such as Photographic Workshops, Fungi Identification Workshops, Nardoo Creek Walking Track Restoration Day and various speaker events and field trips will be happening in the next few months. You don't need to be a member to participate but at just $5 it's not a big expense.
