Locusts In Wedderburn

Written by  Ric Raftis

wedderburntennis250The influx of locusts has certainly happened as promised. Despite all the spraying that has gone on to minimize the impact of the locust plague, they are here in force. It's almost like living in a cloud of locusts when walking around town and driving is even worse.

The invasion of the bowling green and tennis courts is of particular concern. The locusts are well on their way to eating the grass down to its roots. I'm not sure what can be done to redeem the situation with the sporting facilities once the locusts disappear.

Driving is another hazard having to be addressed by locals.  Many people have taken to installing flyscreens over their radiators to prevent a collection of locusts through the grill which would end up causing the car to overheat.  If you haven't put one of these on your car as yet, it is well worthwhile considering doing so.  Our local mechanics tell me that it is important to use flyscreen and not shadecloth as there is insufficient airflow through the shadecloth to keep the engine cool.

Motorcyle riders have either put their machines away or are suffering the splat of locusts on their bikes, clothes and faces in many instances. Many garderns around town are suffering the invasion also with the locusts eating away couch lawns in particular.  They seem to particularly like this variety of grass and are stripping the grass away to the runner.
