Wedderburn's Continuing Wet Weather

Written by  Ric Raftis

After a brief respite on Wednesday, Wedderburn prepared for more wet weather on Thursday with between 40 and 80mm of rain predicted.  As at 7pm on the Thursday, we had measured 40mm in our backyard gauge.

This was enough to start causing all sorts of problems around the area. With the ground wet, the new rains simply ran off and added to the already swollen creeks.

Both the Nardoo Creek and the Korong Creek were running very high and in many places had spilled over their banks.  On Newbold Street where their is a causeway, the Korong was running at almost a metre. You can see many examples of this in the photos and videos below. Generally speaking, homes were safe as far as we know, however there was a contingent of people at Andy and Gail Campbell's filling sandbags.

Water that had run off Hard Hill was coming down both sides. On one side the old dam behind the gold battery was overflowing it's banks and running down Wilson Street. Water was also running down behind Chalmer's place and there was quite a bit of water in the yard on the corner of Boundary Street and the Highway. Chris Lloyd's paddock where Tonkins have their hardware business was just a sea of water. Fortunately, both the store and the house were above the water levels.

Many people were out and about looking at the flooded roads and the creeks as it is extremely unusual for Wedderburn to see anything like this.  Hopefully the rain will hold off now and the floodwaters can subside.
