KurracaBurN Heights Boutique Accommodation

Kuraccaburn Bed & BreakfastKurracaBurN Heights at Wedderburn

Your hosts Michelle and Bruce Hargreaves provide boutique accommodation at Wedderburn, Victoria, in the heart of Central Victoria’s Golden Triangle.

Wedderburn is an historic gold mining town. It is claimed that 80% of the world’s largest nuggets have been found within 40km of Wedderburn. In 1980 3 school boys found the Beggary Lump weighing 2.4kg.

KurracaBurN Heights is an iconic 1938 building and was the Korong Bush Nursing Hospital for just over 50 years.  In 2007 the Hargreaves family began the conversion of the building to provide single, double and twin share accommodation with ensuites and rooms with shared facilities.  All rooms are well appointed and decorated in modern colours for a restful décor. All areas, including bathrooms, have wheelchair access.  Also offered is a comfortable shared kitchen area with tea and coffee making facilities.

KurracaBurN Heights is set in picturesque gardens. Relax and watch the sunset from the front veranda. The house overlooks Donaldson Park recreation reserve and the Nardoo Creek. It is just a 5 minute walk to cafes and Wedderburn shops and Hotel.  The back garden opens out onto bushland and walking tracks.  It is a 2 minute walk to the Wedderburn Golf Course.

Kurracaburn Bed and Breakfast WedderburnKurracaBurN Heights at Wedderburn is just 50 minutes north-west of Bendigo on the Calder Highway and just over 2 hours North West of Melbourne. Wedderburn remains a destination for gold prospectors and is just 20 minutes from Melville Caves and 10 minutes from Mount Korong.

Little Lake Boort Self Drive

The walk around the lake follows a well maintained path suitable for all abilities. It takes about 1 hour to walk its entire length of 3.7km. Seats are spread all around to take a rest and enjoy the scenery. There are plenty of things to see. Some more obvious than others.

Down load the CD, print the map and we will take you on a guides tour!

CD, portable CD players and maps are available at the Boort Caravan Park and at the BRIC (opposite the tennis courts).

If you are in a hurry, you can drive around the lake and get an idea of what is there. Take a copy of the map, it has the points of interest marked. You will need to stop a few times for the information to keep up...

Enjoy our lake!

Wedderburn Floods - Final Report

What an amazing day it's been. We lost power in Wedderburn at 11.55pm on 14 January and are still without power at 6pm on the 15th. Apparently the problem is the substation at Charlton. The Powercor website said it was due to storms, but there haven't been any. We can only assume it's due to floodwaters as the substation is on the outskirts of town and in a low lying area. Reports indicate as many as 8000 homes affected throughout the region.

We finally had some good news with ABC Radio broadcasting information about affected areas and where relief centres were.

Wedderburn Area Floods Aftermath

The sun is finally shining and no more rain is showing on the radar. It looks like the wet weather has finally departed, but there is still significant water to drain away.

We decided to take a drive out to Logan this morning and check on the flood waters out there, in particular around Fentons Creek.  Many places were just a sea of water as you will see in the video and photos we managed to take. With the amount of water around, there is no doubt the Avoca River will be flooding and Charlton will be sandbagging the town for the third time in recent months.  I imagine that this time it will be worse than the last two times as there is just such a huge volume of water around.

Wedderburn's Continuing Wet Weather

After a brief respite on Wednesday, Wedderburn prepared for more wet weather on Thursday with between 40 and 80mm of rain predicted.  As at 7pm on the Thursday, we had measured 40mm in our backyard gauge.

This was enough to start causing all sorts of problems around the area. With the ground wet, the new rains simply ran off and added to the already swollen creeks.

Wedderburn's Wet January

Water over roadsAt the time of writing this blog post which is 7pm on the 11th January, we have recorded a total of 79mm of rain over Monday and Tuesday.

We travelled to Kerang yesterday and even as early as 11am there was much flooding all the way. The journey was continually delayed with water across the road, although the entrance to Borung was surprisingly clear on the way over. Last year when we had all that rain, the entrance to Borung from Korong Vale was covered with water for at least 200 metres.  On the way back from Kerang however, there was the water all over the road at Borung.  Many of the other trouble spots we experienced heading over however had drained away.
