Dave McHattan has owned and operated the Railway Hotel at Wychitella since March 1998. Dave invites you to come and enjoy the warmth and hospitality of a traditional country pub with the myriad of old world charm that you would expect.
Just a pleasant 18 kilometre drive from Wedderburn through bush and rolling countryside will get you there. Simply travel north on the Calder Highway for about 7 kilometres and you will see the turnoff to the right. Eleven kilometres further on you will come to Wychitella. Across the railway line turn right and the pub is on your left. You can't miss it!!!
This historical hotel was originally built in 1882 to service the railway line which ran between Bendigo and Wycheproof. These were the days when many people travelled by rail and would take refreshments at the hotel. The railway is now only used for grain cartage and Wychitella, like so many small railway towns, has simply become a quiet place with a few houses. This does not in any way detract from the deep history of the area though.
Traditionally a grain and sheep area, Wychitella still holds it own today in this area. There are still quite a number of the original families in the area where farms have been handed down through the generations. You will often find a number of these friendly locals in the bar who are a wealth of information on the area, both present and historically.
