When the original gold rush to Wedderburn began in 1852 the area’s population swelled to 5,000. The Wedderburn hotel quickly followed in 1855. The original hotel was built with bush timber and bark. A stone weatherboard and iron combination followed.
The hotel was operated by the Morecroft family for 73 years from 1855-1928. Numerous wine shanties came and went on the goldfields but by 1886 there were 5 licensed hotels in Wedderburn with Martha Morecroft the licensee of the Wedderburn Hotel.
For many years the hotel also boasted extensive stables and a stock saleyard. Farmers would stable their horses at the hotel, attend the sale of sheep or cattle and then refresh themselves at the hotel.
The existing hotel was built in 1901 and its basic configuration has remained since then. Wedderburn’s hotels gradually closed until 1970 when the Wedderburn remained. Since the Morecrofts there have been 12 licencees with Gavan Holt holding the licence since 1982-2008 and Craig Jackson the current operator.
